Abstract

A method for extracting estimates of crowd movementfrom videos of the crowd was reported at EMSS 2007.The goal of this method is to provide a means to validatethe accuracy of crowd models such as the Helbing-Molnar-Farkas-Vicsek (HMFV) model and to provide a means torefine model parameters. The method uses optical flowextracted from the video with an empirical calibrationconstant to convert the optical flow to boundary crossingrates of crowd movement. A simple proportionalrelationship between optical flow and crossing rates ofpeople was postulated on the basis of theoreticalconsiderations. This paper reports on further crowdobservations designed to confirm the simple form of theproportionality constant. While the research is on-going,preliminary results support the relationship.
