Abstract

SuperTerminal 1, the main terminal of Hong Kong AirCargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) located at the southeast corner of the Hong Kong International Airport, is aUS$1 billion investment and it is the largest air cargoterminal of the busiest airport in the world. This 6-storey infrastructure consist a complex array ofinterconnected computer controlled material handlingsystems. This paper illustrates the use of simulationmodeling as a planning tool for service improvement ofthis world-class automated air cargo terminal. Theobjective of the simulation is to substantiate the value ofservice improvement initiatives. The results from thesimulation model were used to quantify and assess theimpact before implementation of these serviceimprovement initiatives. A simulation model of theexisting operation was built and validated. Experimentswere performed by transforming operational orders oftypical days into input orders under assumptions ofdifferent â??what-ifâ?? scenarios
