Abstract

With the substantial growth in marine traffic, anchoragespace is now in high demand in certain hub ports. Toprovide decision support for port authorities, we haveanalyzed the usage of anchorages in recent years. Thedemands on the anchorages arise from the dynamicallychanging vessel mix and similarly complex servicepatterns. The utilization and the capacity of ananchorage space also depend heavily on the dispatchingand allocation rules as well as the shape and areas of theanchorage. The complexity of the system studied istherefore beyond the current analytical tools, and hencesimulation provides an effective means for the study. Inthis paper, we present a simulation-based capacityanalysis on anchorages. The simulation model built isable to match the current scenarios well, and theanalysis by simulation proves very useful in assessinganchorage utilization and capacity for future scenarios.
