Towards Industry 5.0: some research challenges and opportunities.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBuilt on the pillars of human-centricity and resilience, Industry 5.0 is focused on fostering the industry towards a new paradigm that not only remains within economic boundaries but also actively contributes to well-being and sustainability. The adoption of Industry 5.0 principles is just at the beginning phase in Europe, where the paradigm is transitioning from awareness and methods development to implementation. In this conference, the industrial human needs, human factors and potential future applications are analysed, exploring the links with cyber-physical human systems and enabling technologies. The initiative of Community of Practice of Industry 5.0 (CoP Industry 5.0, European Commission) is also presented. Two case studies with applications in the industry and the recently funded Horizon Europe project FORTIS, all driven by Artificial Intelligence with applications to manufacturing, are discussed. Finally, some directions and specific areas for potential research are presented.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRodolfo Haber received the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid, Spain, in 1999. Researcher of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) since 2006. From 2020-24, he has been Director of the Center for Automation and Robotics of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), formerly Vice-Director (2016-20). He has authored 3 books, 18 patents and trade secrets, 21 book chapters, and dozen of articles in indexed journals and conference papers. He has been co-founder of the starts-up Kinequo S.L. (2015), Xymbot Digital Solutions S.L. (2020) and Invofox SL (2022). Since 2002, he has belonged to the IFAC\u2019s TC3.1\/5.1 Computers for Control\/Manufacturing Plant Control of IFAC, ASME TC Model Identification and Intelligent Systems and IEEE IES TC on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems. He is member of the Editorial Board of several journals, editing nowadays a Collection Topic \u201cSmart manufacturing systems and industry 4.0 Technologies\u201d (Scientific Reports, Nature Portfolio). He represents CSIC in \u201cData, AI and Robotics (DAIRO)\u201d EU Association and he is member of Industry 5.0 Community of Practice Initiative (European Commission). Assembly systems in the flexibility era: \nhuman-centric design paradigms from logistics to workstation<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Assembly is a production process in which parts are sequentially added until the final product is completed. The growing diversity of products and the adoption of the assembly-to-order paradigm have led to the design of assembly systems capable of producing a wide array of variants of the same base product using a mixed-model approach. This has resulted in a significant increase in complexity, particularly in managing the logistics of thousands of parts required to supply the assembly systems. Moreover, each workstation involves numerous tasks that require the handling of a variety of tools and components. This need for flexibility has led to a substantial reliance on manual assembly. A human-centric approach requires the design of such systems to consider both productivity and operator well-being, incorporating factors such as fatigue, energy expenditure, mental workload, ergonomics, safety, and other human-related aspects into a multi-objective workspace design. Flexible automation and collaborative robots offer promising solutions, alongside other technologies such as vision systems, artificial intelligence, and smart sensors.
This keynote talk aims to outline an integrated design procedure for assembly systems within the human-centric paradigm, where flexibility is a key requirement in the manufacturing of customized products. The human-centric design principles considered are integrated with innovative technologies. Physical and logical attributes of the workspace, derived from human factors are considered. The design procedure progresses from logistics considerations to workstation design, including the proper task allocation between resources (human or automated), definition of an appropriate workbench, the positioning of tools and parts within the workstation, and the optimization of logistics and parts feeding policies. By comparing various case studies of assembly system designs, the talk analyzes quantitative data on human factors and productivity, as well as the resulting workspace shape and dimensions. The results demonstrate significant improvements in both human factor optimization and productivity, underscoring the practical relevance and implications of this research.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMaurizio Faccio is Full Professor of Industrial Systems and Logistics at the School of Engineering, University of Padua (Italy).\nAfter earning a Master\u2019s degree in Management Engineering with full marks and honors (110\/110 cum laude) from the University of Padua, he obtained a Ph.D. in Industrial Systems at the same institution, with a dissertation titled “Assembly in the Modern Industrial Production”.\nHis teaching and research activities focus on the design and management of: Industrial plants,\tAssembly systems, Industrial logistics and warehouses, Industry 4.0 and 5.0-centered system.\n
\nHe has authored approximately 200 scientific publications, over 150 of which are indexed in Scopus, with an H-index of 36.
\nProf. Faccio is included in the World\u2019s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for the year 2024.
\nHe currently serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing (Springer, Impact Factor: 8.33), ranked 15th in SJR-Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in 2022. He is also a member of several international editorial boards, including Assembly Automation (Emerald).
\nHis research has received recognition from international journals and conferences for its novelty and impact, and he has been awarded in the context of funded research projects.\nProf. Faccio is an active member of the International Technical Committee TC 5.1 \u2013 Manufacturing Plant Control (IFAC), and serves as Scientific Vice-Chair for Plant Operations Management.\nHe has participated in numerous national and international research programs, including the European Project MAIA (Models and Methods for an Active Ageing Workforce: an International Academy, H2020-MSCA-RISE).
\nHe leads or collaborates on a wide range of research projects with Italian and European industrial partners. In particular, he has coordinated nearly 100 research projects focused on innovation and technology transfer in the field of Industrial Systems and Logistics. These initiatives have involved organizations with high economic (business volume) and social (employment) impact. Emmanuel Francalanza is a distinguished academic and researcher in the field of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, currently serving as a member of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta. His research expertise lies in the development of advanced methodologies and tools to facilitate the implementation of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 technologies within industrial settings. Prof. Ing. Francalanza\u2019s work is focused on the integration of digital technologies such as Collaborative Robotics, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into industrial automation systems. His research aims to transform traditional manufacturing systems into cyber-physical systems, advancing the next generation of smart, sustainable, and human-centric production processes. From 2019 to 2024, Prof. Ing. Francalanza served as Head of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, as well as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta. He has played a key role in coordinating several nationally funded research initiatives and has been actively involved in numerous European research projects, including Horizon MSCA and Erasmus+ programs. His ongoing research includes participation in the LEONARDO and SME5.0 projects, which explore innovative approaches to intelligent manufacturing and sustainable production. With over 70 publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, three patents, and numerous book chapters, Prof. Ing. Francalanza is recognized for his contributions to the field of industrial engineering. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Production & Manufacturing Research and is a member of the European Professors of Industrial Engineering and Management (EPIEM). Additionally, he currently chairs the Smart Manufacturing Committee, overseeing the implementation of Malta’s smart specialisation strategy. Prof. Ing. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDiego Coglitore holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome and a PhD in Nanoscience from the University of Liverpool. After graduating, he first worked in industry as a production manager for biomedical devices (Rieti), before starting a research career. He worked in the UK (University of Liverpool), then in France (Institut Europ\u00e9en des Membranes, Montpellier), and finally in Italy (CNR Nanotec, Lecce). He later worked as a consultant for R&D projects at both the European and national levels, eventually joining APRE in 2022. There, he serves as the National Contact Point for Cluster 4 of Horizon Europe and manages the NCP4Industry project, the network of national contact points for Cluster 4. This industry is truly global, and I have worked in France, my home country, Singapore and now in Malta since 2020.\nMy Passion for the semiconductor industry stems from the positive impact technology bring to people\u2019s lives: it solves problems, including in challenging social and environmental aspects. Think about electric vehicles, smartphones and other communication devises, more power-efficient industrial system\u2026 All of this is enabled by semiconductors.\n\nThe plant (a \u201cfab\u201d in our industry lingo) that I manage here in Malta is focused on the final stage of chip manufacturing: test & assembly into various packages depending on the application (i.e., not the same package and constrains for a processor going into an EV and a motion sensor going into a smartphone). It belongs to the global network of 13 manufacturing sites of STMicroelectronics in France, Italy, Morocco, Singapore, China, Malaysia and the Philippines. ST is an integrated device manufacturer which means that vast majority of what we sell is manufactured in our own plants \u2013 a key asset for our customers.\n\nMy focus at the Kirkop Fab is to lead and support the implementation of advanced manufacturing processes, often called \u201cIndustry 4.0\u201d, into a high \u2013 volume, high-tech, 24\/7 manufacturing operation. \nCurrently he is a Full Professor of Manufacturing Technologies at the Department of Mechanical, Energy, and Management Engineering – University of Calabria, where he leads the Manufacturing research group. He served as Deputy Rector from 2013 to 2019.

Between 2010 and 2019, he was the Director with the Battery Innovation Center, VUB. He is currently coordinating several national and European projects in the field of characterization, electrical, thermal, electrochemical, and lifetime modeling of various rechargeable energy storage systems. He was and still active in various European projects, such as SUPERLIB, BATTERIES2020, FIVEVB, ORCA, ASSURED, GHOST, OBELICS, ARISE, S4SMILE, IMAGE, SUBLIME, VERSAPRINT, FLEXSHIP, SEABAT, TWININVEST, XL-CONNECT, SOLID, SMARTHANDLE, RELIEF, REINFORCE, . He is author of more than 180 scientific publications. He is also active in several international standardization committees such as ISO\/TC 22\/SC 37. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProf. Dr. Torbj\u00f8rn Netland is Full Professor and Head of Chair of Production and Operations Management (www.pom.ethz.ch<\/a>) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He is a Member of the World Economic Forum\u2019s Global Future Council on Advanced Manufacturing and Value Chains and a Fellow of the European Academy for Industrial Management. His research on achieving and sustaining manufacturing excellence appears in leading scientific journals such as Management Science, Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, and MIT Sloan Management Review. Torbj\u00f8rn is the recipient of the 2023 Jack Meredith Best Paper Award of the Journal of Operations Management, two Shingo Research Awards, and numerous teaching awards. He is co-author of the 800-page textbook \u201cIntroduction to Manufacturing: An Industrial Engineering and Management Perspective\u201d (Routledge, 2022). Parallel Sessions (either regular or invited) will last about 1 hour and 30 minutes and may include between 4 and 5 papers. Both sessions provide the opportunity for Authors (both in-person and virtual) to present their work live<\/b> by sharing their presentations and giving their talk (max 12 minutes) followed by Question & Answers (around 3 minutes). All the blended sessions will be streamed via Zoom so that virtual attendees can also listen to the presentations being held in the conference physical rooms and interact with the audience in there. This way, also presenting authors attending the conference remotely will be able to share their screen, give their talk and interact with the audience in the conference physical rooms. The ISM 2025 Organization Committee has embraced the vision to make the conference the perfect environment for knowledge exchange and dissemination. In particular, dissemination activities (integrated with communication and exploitation) are essential for the impact and success of R&D projects. Funding bodies (e.g. the EU commission) usually request partners to organize midterm and final dissemination events in order to broadly disseminate the outputs of the project.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, ISM 2025 is organizing this special “R&D Projects Dissemination Event” dedicated to oral presentations of ongoing or final results of R&D projects in all the areas related to the conference topics.<\/p>\n
