SCOPE AND GOALS

Industrial development and markets globalization generated extended and complex supply chains in terms of number of actors, their locations, flows of items, information and finances as well as production and logistic strategies based on just-in-time manufacturing. Even if a number of crises (i.e. natural disasters, terrorists attacks, economic crises, health threat diffusion, etc.) have underlined the need to consider a reassessment of the economic development model based on globalization, such crises acted as contingent factors without changing the reference scenario for leading companies operating in global markets.

The financial crisis (started at the beginning of 2008 and still ongoing) has altered the reference scenario involving the most important industrial sectors: automotive, high-tech, telecommunication, aeronautics, maritime transportation, etc. Consider the automotive sector, leading companies, such as Toyota, are redesigning for the first time (after many years) their supply chain based on just-in-time manufacturing; General Motors is facing its greatest crisis after the first world war crisis. In each sector companies have to properly address a number of potential risks related to production and sourcing strategies, logistics and distribution strategies and green industrial operations and green supply chains. When considering the effects of the financial crisis, there is a need to restructure industry and supply chain operations to avoid additional supply chain disruptions, companie bankruptcies and production stops.

Risks and vulnerabilities mitigation and control will continue to receive a great deal of attention (above all along the supply chain to reduce financial risks of weak suppliers) and, in times of economic downturn, companies will focus their effort in identifying and adopting new models to ensure technical, economic and environmental sustainability of industry and supply chain operations.

This special issue aims at providing the opportunity for authors to submit original and unpublished articles on innovative ways to use Modeling & Simulation for technical, economic and environmental sustainability of industry and supply chain operations.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

Risks analysis and mitigation by using Modeling & Simulation

Modeling & Simulation as validation tool for decision support in the financial crisis environment

Modeling multiple sustainability aspects in complex systems

Models for technical sustainability of industrial operations

Industrial Operations Analysis: new production strategies

Inventory Management: new sourcing strategies and new just-in-time paradigms;

Sustainable transportation and distribution strategies

Drivers and guidelines definition for industrial processes and supply chain sustainability;

Promising opportunities analysis within the new reference scenario characterized by the global financial crisis;

Models for economic sustainability of industrial operations

Green industrial operations

Green logistics and supply chain

Papers that propose models including multiple sustainability aspects are particularly encouraged.

Note: The IJSPM Special issue on Industry and Supply Chain: Technical, Economic and Environmental Sustainability

 is based on collection of best papers submitted and presented at the international multi-conference I3M 2009. Authors intending to submit an article to this Special Issue should submit their camera ready papers to the multi-conference I3M 2009 (including EMSS 2009, MAS 2009, HMS 2009).

SUBMISSION

The submission process for the Journal Special Issue will start after the selection of the high quality papers of the I3M multi-conference. Authors of the selected papers will be notified and requested to extend and improve their papers for journal publication. The submission process is completely online using the IJSPM submission system.
